Swapo targets opposition councils

THE Swapo Party must reclaim the opposition-controlled councils in the local and regional election slated for Friday.

This was the appeal to Swapo Party members, supporters and sympathisers by fisheries and marine resources minister Bernhard Esau at a Swapo rally held at the Keetmanshoop's JS Stephanus Stadium on Sunday.

“We must liberate Keetmanshoop and Karasburg (councils) from the control of the opposition. If you are not in control, there will be no development and prosperity,” said Esau.

Saying the Swapo government still faces challenges such as unemployment and control of economy and wealth though it has brought changes in the context of economy and social aspects, Esau remarked: “We want to see factors of production of our country in the hands of our people”.

This, Esau added, will only happen if the Swapo Party exercises control over the means of production that include land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship through the mandate given by the electorate.

Esau said there is no way for people to ignore the peace and stability Swapo has brought after independence.

Furthermore, Esau urged the party members and supporters to remain united in action and purpose, and to guard against attempts by opposition parties to divide them in their bid to win the elections.

Also speaking at the rally, //Karas Swapo Party regional coordinator Mathew Mumbala thanked the party members for having behaved orderly during the election campaign, and encouraged them to go out in numbers to vote for the party.

“We (leadership) have done our part and have now put the trust in you the party members, supporters and sympathisers to go and vote for the correct party,” Mumbala added.
